From recycling to upcycling

From recycling to upcycling, an almost new term you’re hearing more and more in the production chain. At least recycling is something that has been prominent for some time. When a waste product is reprocessed into a raw material after which a new product is created, this is recycling. With upcycling, the recycled raw material can be used for at least the same application as the original application.

Last week, our Managing Director Nico van Lith, was allowed to sit at the table at an internal talk show and talk about the ecological transformation, from consumption to reuse. A great initiative to share knowledge while learning from others.

With the arrival of our new Oasus water bottle, we tried to think about all facets. Here, we not only look at producing the products even more sustainably by making them less heavy, but especially at the phase after long-term reuse, namely the recycling process and making a fully circular product.

In doing so, Nico specifically highlights the black Oasus water bottle. This color has been named “Inclusiv Black” with us. This is because black plastic is usually not sorted out in the recycling process, but incinerated. That’s because the sorting plant often fails to detect the black plastic products. Infrared is used for sorting, and because black absorbs all infrared light, the type of plastic is not recognized. As a result, the product ends up in the residual stream and is thus incinerated.

Therefore, the dye for our Inclusiv black Oasus water bottle is not black but very dark green. So dark green that it appears black to the eye. This does make our Oasus water bottle detectable by the sorting plant and contributes to the recyclability of our products.

By purchasing our Oasus water bottle, you are not only buying a super beautiful sustainable water bottle, but also making a tangible contribution to a better world and environment.
