Together with Ice Hockey the Netherlands we strive to an even more sustainable future. In various ways we take an extra step forwards every time. And this time we made an extra step by helping to realize the the most sustainable Ice Hockey World Championship ever!
The WKU18 in Heerenveen – Thialf is aiming for the title most sustainable Ice Hockey World Championship ever. They therefore pay extra attention in sustainability in different ways. Zo kiezen ze voor het Thialf stadium, een energie efficiënt stadium. They choose for green transport, sustainable hotels, local catering, sustainable materials and prevent, reduce and recycling of waste.
‘Because there is no Planet B’
We as Eurobottle have contributed to this sustainable event by offering our biobased, reusable sports bottles. These sports bottles are used by both the ice hockey players and the volunteers of the World Cup.
What makes the Eurobottle bottles so sustainable? This is of course a broad concept, sustainability is related to many factors.
A reusable bottle is already sustainable by itself, with using it you save an average of 5.5 PET bottles in nature per person! If everyine in the Netherlands chooses this, we will save more than 1 billion PET bottles! But this does not solve the problem of fossil plastic.
Fossil plastic, which is often used in plastic packaging, has negative consequences for the environment. Crude oil is used to produce this plastic. Crude oil is a fossil fuel and its production therefore has negative consequences for the environment.
That is why haven chosen to switch to biobased plastic in 2014, produced from ethanol extracted from sugar cane. Sugar cane is a renewable raw material and absorbs a lot of CO2 when growing, which means that biobased plastic has negative CO2 emissions. The production process of biobased plastic therefore has a lower ecological footprint than plastic made from crude oil.
