Together for Plastic Free Land & Sea

The mission of Plastic Whale

The mission of Plastic Whale is clear, to make waves of changes. Together with corporate partners and the general public, they are committed to cleaning up our land and sea, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

Every year, more than 15,000 people take action to get involved in this wonderful mission by participating in plastics events in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and beach cleanups on various beaches. The PET bottles they collect during these cleanups are being recycled into PET foam sheets from which they build their plastic fishing boats, in addition the PET plastic is also recycled into PET felt for their office furniture line, that they have developed with manufacturer Vepa.

One way to reduce single-use PET bottles in nature is to use a reusable water bottle. Per person, you save an average of 5.5 PET bottles from ending up in nature by using a reusable water bottle! To encourage this, Plastic Whale has partnered with Eurobottle to work together to expand the mission for a plastic-free land and water. Plastic Whale’s Mission Bottle is produced at our factory in the Netherlands, made from bio-based plastic and completely mono-material making it excellent for recycling.

So what makes the bottle sustainable?

Of course, sustainable is a broad term, so what do we mean by this? This goes from the raw material to the “after life” of the bottle. With every step we produce as sustainably as possible and make the recyclability as easily as possible.

Biobased material

With plastic packaging, it is often fossil plastic that is being used. However, this has negative environmental consequences. Therefore, we choose a biobased raw material from a residual material of sugarcane. Sugar cane is a renewable resource and absorbs a lot of CO2 while it grows. The manufacturing process of biobased plastic therefore has a lower carbon footprint than fossil oil-based plastic.

Reusable

A key factor in the sustainability of the bottle is its optimal reusability. The bottle is designed to last long, is dishwasher safe and has excellent quality. This allows you to keep using the bottle and this contributes to the reduction of single-use plastics.

Mono material

But what about the recycling? At some point, the water bottle can be completely used up and you need to throw it away. We’ve thought of that, as well. In fact, the bottle is excellent for recycling by using one type of material. We do not put any other plastics in the product, so it’s made of 100% mono material. For example, we do not use plastic edges in the cap but still guarantee that our products are 100% leak-proof.

Discover the development of the Mission Bottle

In a great collaboration, Plastic Whale and Eurobottle were able to bring a new sustainable water bottle to the market. To continue together the mission for a plastic-free land and sea. Plastic Whale was looking for a sustainable bottle and we were happy to participate!

In our own factory we have everything you need to develop your own bottle. The bottles here are produced using extrusion blow molding technology and the caps using injection molding technology.

In good cooperation with Plastic Whale, the optimal opportunities for the development of the Mission Bottle were explored. A decision was made to keep the existing cap of Eurobottle’s Oasus bottle, allowing the focus to be placed on developing just the bottle. This decision also allows for the reuse of existing parts, which is in line with the sustainable efforts of both Plastic Whale and Eurobottle.

After completing the design on paper, a prototype was created by 3D printing. This allowed us to get a physical feel for the final product and make any adjustments for an optimal user experience.

Would you like to have the final result? This is possible! The Mission Bottle is available to order from the website of Plastic Whale.
